Budgeting, Household Savings

The next time you are thinking of buying new things for your kid, just use this strategy to save yourself some money!

Whether it’s your child’s birthday or the family gets together to celebrate a holiday, inevitably the kids will receive lots of toys. One way to save money is to put some of the new toys away and bring them out a few months later. The kids will think they are getting new toys.

Another way to handle this is to take old toys and store them away for several months. When the children get bored with the toys they have you can take out a few toys – not all that you’ve put away – and give them to the kids to play with. They won’t realize the toys aren’t new; it will seem like it to them.

When it comes to buying toys for kids, they can wander through a toy store and choose several. They may only get to buy one or two, but inevitably after they’ve played with it for awhile they get bored. Throwing away old toys may not be a good idea, though, since money is tight right now. Besides, the toys are perfectly fine - it’s just that the kids rather play with another toy.

In addition, children are fickle about certain toys. There are just so many times you can play the jack-in-the box tune and watch the puppet pop up. Or playing with alphabet blocks can become boring after a while. Why not store these toys away and then one day, wrap them up as if they were brand spanking new.

Everything today has gone up: food, gas prices, health care coverage, and other necessities of life. Toys are no exception. Every year, there are new toys that hit the market that kids want for Christmas or their birthday. You may not be able to afford these expensive toys. Moreover, with most kids today using cell phones and PCs the bills can insurmountably increase.

Here’s another tip if you want to save money on toys: Go to any flea market and you may find some used toys which are in excellent condition. Thrift shops and dollar stores may also have an assortment of toys suitable for your children.

Today, we are more aware than ever of the problems encountered with toys shipped from China. This may be a reason to avoid buying toys that are made in China due to the lead paint and other more recent news that required a recall of these toys.

While toys are a good way to keep children occupied, educational toys are a great source of learning and, for example, those that come in a series can be purchased in bulk and used over and over again.

Probably the most important aspect of not buying new toys but hanging on to the old is that children grow up and lose interest. So whatever toys you have on hand, it may be a great idea to clean them up, wrap them in a box and save them for those days when the kids are restless and want to play with something new.
